Every October, Canadians recognize the contributions of people with disabilities and the importance of creating inclusive workplaces during National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This year marks NDEAM’s 81st anniversary, with the theme:
“Skills Grow Economies. Disability Inclusion Fuels the Growth.”
The theme highlights the valuable skills already present within Canada’s workforce and the critical role disability inclusion plays in helping organizations access talent, strengthen performance, and drive growth.
For more than 30 years, Performance Plus Rehabilitative Care Inc. (PPRC) has worked with employers to promote disability inclusion and help businesses benefit from the skills and talents of job seekers with disabilities.
One of the ways we support employment success is through PPRC Connect, our mentoring program that links job seekers with experienced employer guides. Through these connections, participants explore career pathways, gain industry insights, and discover how their existing skills can support meaningful employment opportunities.
Since launching in 2020, PPRC Connect has facilitated 101 mentor matches involving more than 50 employers across the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. Participants have explored careers in customer service, retail, information technology, administration, libraries, social services, communications, human rights, law, policy analysis, hospitality, food inspection, pet care, archaeology, and even beekeeping.
While the primary goal of mentorship is learning and knowledge sharing, the program has also led to employment opportunities when talented job seekers and inclusive employers find the right fit.
During NDEAM, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the many mentors who have generously shared their time, knowledge, and encouragement. We also recognize the City of Ottawa for its ongoing partnership and commitment to showcasing the value of mentorship as a powerful tool for workplace inclusion.
Together, we are helping build a workforce where talent is recognized, opportunities are accessible, and everyone can contribute their skills and potential.
